The Language of Alcohol

If you were raised in a family where one or more people struggled with alcohol abuse, this might feel familiar. Often as counselors we ask our clients to consider the "language" they learned at home, the unspoken rules they learned that might now shape the way they live their lives. Look at the list and tell me if any of these unspoken rules rings a bell...

These rules don't have to solely pertain to growing up in a home with alcohol abuse, but can also occur where there is physical, emotional or drug abuse. If you find that some of these statements hit close to home, perhaps you'd like to talk about it. A mental health professional could help you weed through these unspoken rules and establish a set of new, healthy "rules" for your life.

If you are interested in finding a mental health professional in your area, I suggest check Psychology Today and reading some counselor profiles. Once you find one that resonates with you, give them a call to find out more.
